Biography
My name is Kim Tolentino. I am a 4th-year Sport, Exercise, & Performance Psychology doctoral candidate at West Virginia University.
I received my Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in December 2023 from West Virginia University and a Master's in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport & Exercise Psychology from Long Beach State University in May 2020.
I am an experienced mental performance consultant working toward my certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC®) from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. My applied work has mainly been with teams and individual athletes ranging from ages 12-18 through the NCAA collegiate level. I also work with coaches to provide leadership and coach-athlete relationship support.
I currently am a Mental Health Counselor at the University of Missouri athletics department where I provide therapeutic services to student-athletes.
My dissertation research is titled: A Case Study Exploring NCAA Division I Mental Health Culture through Stakeholder's Perspectives. My line of research has focused on the NCAA mental health and the coach population. Previously, I have conducted research on coaches' basic psychological needs and its association with workaholism in the profession. I have also helped assist in research on mental toughness development, coach-athlete relationships, athletic trainers' roles in fostering athletes' basic psychological needs, and coaching regrets.
